A statement by the Secretary General

I wish to stress here that, in the Arab region, youth initiatives have witnessed a notable evolution. As you know, around 70% of our societies are under the age of 30. This is a demographic opportunity……yes it is an opportunity not a disaster, holds the potentials for a positive transformation in the Arab World if properly invested in it through the right Social and Economic policies, and through engaging the young society in all aspects of life. I consider this a smart investment in the future…...more

Several points I should be underlined:

  • Youth participation in development should be assured especially in realizing the MDGs.
  • Addressing the Inequalities, and the needs of the most disadvantaged, should be sustained.
  • Promoting female youth, and ensuring their equal participation in public life.
  • Building more scientific knowledge for the youth would enhance their ability to actively and effectively engage in the planning and implementing programs pertaining to building societies and achieving better economic achievements.
  • Supporting Youth organizations.
  • Strengthening partnerships among governments, youth organizations, universities, civil society, and media as well as private sector.

Objectives and themes

In preparation for The Economic & Social Development Summit that will be held on 19th January, 2011 in Sharm El-sheikh/ Egypt. As youth dimension intersects with all the developmental issues addressed on the summit’s agenda. Like the precedent Economic & Social Development Summit (Kuwait 2009) to devote the tradition of holding an Arab Youth Leaders Meeting on the sidelines of every Development Summit, & within the framework of celebrating the International Year of youth as an implementation of the Arab Summit resolution (Sirt 2010) and the Council of Arab Ministers for Youth and Sport Resolution (2009), the League of Arab States/ Social Sector in collaboration with the Council of Arab Ministers of Youth and Sport and the stakeholders in Egypt, and supported by the Arab and International partners, are organizing the “Arab Youth Forum”.... more


Proposals for Arab Projects on Youth & Technology

The forum aims at crystalizing ideas of proposals and projects on how to utilize the new technologies in empowering youth. On this occasion all the interested young are invited to submit a number of their proposals that are effective & highly prioritized on the Arab level which will contribute to the preparation of the forum’s activities

Sirt Summit 2010: Calling for empowering youth to participate effectively in their communities through taking part in the political, cultural, social and economic development, and welcoming resolution of the General Assembly at the UN that agreed on the Tunisian President’s initiative on announcing 2010 the International Year of Youth. We stress on supporting this initiative through organizing National activities and through active participation in the World Youth Conference that will be held under the UN umbrella. We are also welcoming the Algerian initiative to develop the Arab collaboration in the Youth field. We are also intending to prioritize youth issues as a part of the joint Arab work agenda... more
